Hello and welcome to my web site. My name is Steve Grossman and I’ve been hanging wallpaper for over 30 years. It all started in 1982. I was playing drums in a band in New Jersey and working in the fur market in New York City, and I realized that the fur market just wasn’t for me. My friend (and guitar player in my band) Brian Drucks worked with his uncle hanging wallpaper and asked me if I wanted to learn. I thought it was a great opportunity to learn a cool trade while I waited to become famous. Ha ha!
I started out by just picking up scraps and razor blades for all of the other paperhangers, but fairly quickly I was in charge of the table, which included the responsibilities of re-rolling the wallpaper, mixing the paste, pasting the paper and delivering the strips to the installer. (real exciting stuff!)
I caught on pretty quick and in about 5-6 months, I was installing wallpaper. At first I did commercial wallpaper at 54″ wide on straight walls. When I mastered straight walls, the boss put me in more challenging areas.
For about the first year or so, it was like any other job, then, something funny happened. I actually started to enjoy hanging wallpaper. At the end of the day, it’s a very satisfying feeling to complete a job and see the look on the client’s face viewing their new room. Now I’m not saying its as good as playing drums at a sold out arena, but it feels good none-the-less. PLUS, it enabled me maintain an artistic edge in my occupation.
Now as I progress towards my 31st year, there isn’t a challenge that I haven’t been able to conquer. I’ve hung every type of wall covering out there. I’ve been asked to hang wall paper for some of the biggest of Rock Stars, Actors, Broadway actors, Record Producers, the guy where, “An educated consumer is our best customer” and a coach of the New York Knicks.
So you may ask how did you end up in Connecticut? Well, I was on a job in South Orange, NJ and the girlfriend of the homeowner told her friend back in CT of “this guy” she met hanging wallpaper at her boyfriend’s house. She took a picture of me and showed her friend. I was told her friend could “work with that” and a date was set up. I didn’t tell her right away, but I fell in love immediately and after a year and a half, we got married on the beach in Cabo San Lucas. It wasn’t long before we decided that CT would be the new home base for the two of us. And there you have it, because of my wife, I am now available to hang wallpaper for an entirely new group of people I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to meet!
